The Sigma Beta Program History

In the early 1950's, Dr. Parlett L. Moore, Phi Beta Sigma's National Education Director, and later International President, launched a youth organization originally called the Beta Club to combat the scarcity of positive role models for young males. On April 23, 1954, the first club chapter was organized. Now 51 years later, in the form of the SIGMA BETA CLUB, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. continues to answer the call in making a difference in the lives of our adolescents. As the youth organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Men help develop Strong Values, Leadership Skills, Social Responsibility, Cultural Awareness, and Pride amongst the membership. Through wholesome interactions, the Brothers of Sigma serve as mentors and guides to the members and participate in Academic Skills Enrichment, Athletic Contests, Social and Cultural Activities, Community Service Projects, and more.

With membership in over 95 SIGMA BETA CLUB CHAPTERS across the country, the various chapters never cease to remain a force for change in their various locations and communities. With program areas such as Education, Social, Culture, and Athletics, Sigma Beta Club members consistently remain focused on being the "ELITE" and “The Next Generation of Leaders, Accepting the Responsibility, Loving the Challenge.

The Mu Beta Sigma chapter of the Sigma Beta Club has been in existence since the June of 1999. Since then, the club has been involved with various aspects of the community, such as adopting a street clean up program, feeding the homeless, providing clothes and toys for the needy, participating in the city of L.R. clean-up day, volunteering for the Race for the Cure, and the M. L. King Marade just to name a few. It is our mission to become not only a sound voice within the community, but to be trendsetters for our future generation.
